Memory foam dog bed: what it is, how it works and when it’s worth it

Cama viscoelástica para perros: qué es, cómo funciona y cuándo merece la pena

Memory foam is the most common material in orthopedic beds for dogs, but it is rarely explained exactly what it does. Here is what you need to know to decide if your dog needs it, and how to distinguish a good one from one that just says so on the label.

What is memory foam

Holfur memory foam dog bed

It is a foam that slowly adapts to the shape and heat of the body, and gradually regains its shape when the weight is removed. That is why it is called memory foam. Instead of pushing up like a spring, it distributes the weight over the entire surface and reduces pressure on the main support points: hips, shoulders, and elbows.

Memory foam bed, memory foam mattress, and regular foam bed

Regular foam Memory foam mattress Bed with multi-layer core
What it is A block of foam or batting A sheet of memory foam, without structure High-density foam base, memory foam on top, and batting
With use It gets flattened and deformed It adapts, but if it is thin, it sinks to the floor The base supports and the memory foam adapts
For whom Small dogs, occasional use Transport or as a supplement Daily use, large and older dogs

Memory foam alone is not enough: if the layer is thin or does not have firm foam underneath, a large dog will go through it and end up resting on the floor. That is why Holfur beds combine high-density foam and memory foam, and several models add a layer of batting.

For which dogs is it worth it

For a small, young dog that sleeps curled up, the difference is smaller, although the bed will last longer without deforming.

How to recognize a good memory foam bed

Foam core and memory foam of a Holfur bed

  1. Hand test: press your palm in the center. If you feel the floor, it is too soft for a medium or large dog.
  2. That it says what is underneath: "memory foam" by itself usually means a thin layer.
  3. Waterproof inner cover: memory foam cannot be washed; if it gets wet or smells, the bed will be ruined.
  4. Removable outer cover: this is the one you will actually wash.

How to care for it so it lasts

Memory foam cannot go in the washing machine. What is washed is the outer cover; the waterproof inner cover keeps the core dry and clean. Ventilate the bed from time to time and, if your dog has accidents, clean it as soon as it happens. You have the step-by-step guide in how to wash your dog's bed.

Frequently asked questions

Does memory foam get hot?

It adapts to the heat of the body, so it may feel slightly warmer than regular foam. A breathable fabric cover compensates for this in summer.

Better mattress or bed?

For daily use, a bed with a multi-layer core. A thin mattress works as a supplement or for travel.

How long does it last?

With a waterproof inner cover and a good base, several years. When it no longer regains its shape, it is time to replace it.
