Christmas gift for your dog: how to choose the right bed

Regalo de Navidad para tu perro: cómo acertar con una cama

An adult dog sleeps between 12 and 16 hours a day. Few gifts get used that much. That's why a good bed is one of the few Christmas gifts for dogs that won't end up forgotten in a drawer in January.

The problem is getting it right. A bed that is too small, too soft, or impossible to wash will end up shoved into a corner. This guide helps you choose the right one in five minutes.

1. Before choosing: measure your dog while they sleep

Size is chosen by how your dog sleeps, not by breed. Measure your dog lying down and add a few centimeters. If they sleep stretched out, they need more surface area; if they sleep curled up, one size down may be enough.

Size Dimensions (length × width) Suitable for
Small 75 × 55 cm Yorkshire, Chihuahua, Maltese
Medium 95 × 60 cm Beagle, Cocker, French Bulldog
Large 110 × 70 cm Labrador, Golden Retriever, Border Collie
Extra Large 120 × 80 cm German Shepherd and large dogs that sleep stretched out

If you are torn between two sizes, choose the larger one. You can find all the details in our size guide.

2. What the bed needs to have

  • Firm core, not soft: high-density and memory foam that distributes weight and does not sag over time. This is what matters most for large or older dogs.
  • Double cover: an outer cover that can be removed and washed, and a waterproof inner cover that protects the core from liquids and accidents.
  • It needs to fit in your home: if you don't like the bed, it will end up in a corner where your dog doesn't want to be.

3. Three Holfur beds for your home

4. The trick no one gives you: an extra cover

At Christmas there are visitors, muddy walks, and changes in routine. With a second cover, you can wash one while your dog uses the other and they are never without a bed. The winter covers cost from €40.90, and the waterproof inner cover from €19.90.
